Optimising businesses with truer colour through an LED lighting upgrade

CRI through LED lighting

You probably already know about the benefits of upgrading to LED lighting, but have you considered the importance of rendering true colour in your business? Perhaps you have a car showroom and need to show vibrant colour? It sounds complicated and expensive, but it could make all the difference between a customer making the purchase or walking straight back out the door.

Thankfully, we now have the capability to measure whether a light source reproduces colours of objects faithfully through a measure called the Colour Rendering Index (CRI).

In general terms, CRI is a measure of a light source’s ability to show object colours ‘realistically’ or ‘naturally’ compared with an ideal or natural light source such as daylight. CRI is a scale from 0 to 100 percent indicating how accurate a ‘given’ light source is at rendering colour when compared to a ‘reference’ light source. The higher the CRI, the better the colour rendering ability as shown above. And LED lighting products are offering higher CRI than ever before.

It is important to consider that higher colour rendering is more relevant in areas where colour plays a big part. Retail spaces in particular, require colours to be seen as accurate as possible. Furniture retailers, clothing boutiques and car dealerships should all be aware of the benefits lighting can provide in enhancing the presentation of merchandise. LED lighting can achieve very high levels of CRI as opposed to standard fluorescent tubes. Higher CRI adds a vibrancy to any store display. This gives the retailer both a very efficient lighting system while providing the customer an excellent retail experience. Ultimately this will help make important purchasing decisions an easier undertaking for would-be customers.
