Background
The centre is a fantastic facility and basketball hub, however they had not updated their lights since inception. This caused a number of issues, including dark spots, long start up times and most importantly, a lack of light output. As the sport of basketball has grown in Australia, the centre desperately needed an upgrade to showcase Wollongong’s beloved Illawarra Hawks to professional broadcasts.
The project
Broadcast quality lighting for indoor stadiums requires lighting levels of over 2,000 lux and colour rendering index (CRI) of above 90. Our lighting team designed a layout with highbays mounted directly above the court and sports lights mounted above both long sides of the court to achieve standards. The highbay was a bespoke fitting that we designed with a high CRI output. The whole project was completed in two months.
Results
The arena was transformed from a dark, amateur sporting venue, to a professional, 2,000 lux television broadcast facility. The lights turn on instantly and stay cool which also saves the venue on air conditioning costs.
